Pregnant Chicks

Nope, I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about the two movies I saw two nights in a row:

On Friday night, Gerhardt, Eric and I went to see the new movie Knocked Up starring Grey's Anatomy's Katherine Heigl. It was pretty hilarious, but I have to agree with Dana Stevens of Slate when she says that the movie is written with very little insight into women. All of the funniness came from the scenes in which Seth Rogan's character was bantering with his friends. The women are portrayed, albeit respectfully, as control freaks with no character development, let alone sense of humor. But the movie was definitely entertaining, and as Eric pointed out, it's filled with groundling humor for two hours and then ends with five minutes of loving parents and sweet baby pictures, so everyone wins.

Ironically, I saw another movie last night featuring yet another unwanted pregnancy. Waitress is about a pie-making diner gal named Jenna, played by Keri Russell (yep, Felicity), who is scheming to escape her asshole husband when she finds she's pregnant with his baby. The movie is funny at times, and the ending is optimistic, but all in all it's a sad, sad movie
--it's hard to watch Jenna's one remaining dream get crushed. Waitress is made even sadder by the fact that the writer and director, Adrienne Shelly, was murdered in New York before the film could make its debut. Read the NYTimes review and article here.

While I enjoyed the experience of Knocked Up, Waitress was the film that made me think more and feel more. And it earned its laughs, without the raunchy hijinks and ridiculously unrealistic situations.

In other news:
- Started the new summer research, which is going well and should be a great time (It'll also be very nice to get paid).
- The old roommate moved out, so I've got the place to myself!
- Discovered that I have the whole cable lineup in my bedroom, thanks to a cable from the landlords' place downstairs
- Finally hooked up AC in my room, so hopefully things get more comfortable 'round here.
- Costco rocks!
- I'm starting to study for the USMLE Step 1's (the Board exams), wish me luck.
- I'll be headed to Philly for the Magical Midnight HP7 Release-- Crangie, here I come (can we stay with you?)

Bien sur, mes amis! Does that mean Eric is coming too? Guess what: we have a real bed now! in the living room. It's surreal. No more squishy squeaky air-mattresses for our guests, yay:) When are you coming?
